Mediums

EXPERIMENTATION

- Had attempted to get to grips with puppetry, similar to that seen in Henry Selick's Coraline

- Liked the idea as I had enjoyed doing stop motion claymation

- Found it too frustrating to work with and knew I wouldn't be able to produce anything to the best of my ability

- Probably could have been more patient and tried again, but wanted to give myself as much time as possible

- Considered trying paper cut-outs

- Didn't think the medium would be appropriate to the message, as it feels to be a very cheery and childlike approach

- Settled on hand-drawing animation, but couldn't decide between digitally or traditionally drawn

- Traditional inspired by Glen Keane's Nephtali animation - had beautiful fluidity to the character

- Traditional would be harder but more plausible to do over Easter

- Final decision ended up to draw digitally due to softwares being appropriate for the time I had and the product I wanted to produce

- Digital lends itself well to animation due to onion skinning, layers, undos, etc.

- Used Toon Boom programmes

TEACHING MYSELF TOON BOOM HARMONY

- Chose to use Harmony due to natural compatibility with Toon Boom's Storyboard Pro, which I also used

- Allowed me a direct export from Storyboard Pro to Harmony

- Started by animating something very simple that I had done before

- Felt like I would get on well with the programme so continued to use it
