Zoetrope

"Working with 12 separate images, each a size of 10cm x 10cm, placed in a row, you are to create a sequence of drawings that show a 360 degree head turn of a character of your choice. This sequence will test your skills in drawing and animation, and demonstrate your ability to show a character design from all angles.

Working with the Zoetrope format, this sequence will form a looping animation. One that not only shows a character from all angles, but also demonstrates some of the principles of animation. For this exercise, we will be looking at pose-to-pose animation."

INITIAL IDEAS

- Simple head turn

- Wanted to make it human to practice drawing and animating human heads from any angle

- Decided to take inspiration from 'coilheads' from Lethal Company as the spring neck would make for good practice of secondary animation

- Covered eyes to give a little less work to do in the given time

EXPLORATION

- Decided to ink in flat black liner as opposed to using a brush pen; lack of line variation would make it easier for the animation to run smoothly

- Used lightbox to match any identical frames, as well as flip those that would appear on opposite sides

- Attempting to figure out how coil would extend backwards from the 'camera'

Guidelines to ensure correct alignment throughout all 12 frames

Sketches for frames 1, 2, and 3

Use of lightbox to ensure frames 1 and 9 are identical (for seamless head turn)

Frames 10, 11, and 12 all lined before shading

OUTCOME

Head turn animated as GIF in FlipaClip

EVALUATION

- Successful use of fineliner and marker to create simple shading

- Adds detail but not too much that distracts from content of animation

- Simple, minimal, and effective

- Anatomy and facial structure successful; clear understanding of the structure of the human head

- Spring back at the end not quite as successful as it had potential to be

- Secondary animation looks too mechanical and robotic
